Courtney’s Resource Post Two

By reading Nancy Tomes this week I was very impressed with the work of Thomas Story Kirkbride. Whether people feel his intentions lacked true passion, I felt that no matter what his true intentions were he obviously made the mental institution better with his idea of “moral treatment”. In the following link,, the article discusses Kirkbride’s use of photography to entertain the patients. I found this to be another indicator of Kirkbride’s importance to the field of psychiatry. Instead of treating the patients as caged animals, I believe he deeply cared for his patients and their families. This made me realize even more why Nancy Tomes dedicated the majority of her work on Kirkbride and his accomplishments.
